The term gendaito (kanji: 現代刀) means "contemporary sword" in English. It is written げんだいとう in hiragana. It may also be rendered in English as gendaitou or gendaitō. It's pronounced roughly like "gen dye toe".
In the case of gendaito, by “contemporary” is meant the Meiji Era (1868-1912) onward. 現代, gendai, can be a standalone word; it means the present. The kanji 現, gen, is normally employed as a variant of the verb arawasu, 現す, which means to show, reveal, or appear.
代, dai, means generation. It is used, for example, in the phrase “from generation to generation” (daidai, 代々, だいだい). Note that this word begins with a hard “g”, not like “jendaito”.
