The term kenjutsu (kanji: 剣術) means "the art of swords" in English. It is written けんじゅつ in hiragana. It's pronounced roughly like "ken-joot-sue".
While this literally means “the art of swords”, in this case, it refers to the art of fighting with Japanese swords. It should be distinguished from kendoKENDO 剣道 "the way of the sword" learn more... (剣道), which uses bamboo swords and is a sport. The first kanji is pronounced, in the Japanese reading, tsurugiTSURUGI 剣 "sword [non-Japanese]" learn more.... By itself, it never refers to Japanese swords.
The second kanji means way or skill. It is used, for example, in the Japanese word for the fine arts (bijutsu, 美術, literally “skill in the beautiful”) and in the martial art of jiu-jitsu (properly rendered in English as jujutsu, 柔術, literally “skill in that which is soft/flexible”).
