The term kami (kanji: 神) means "god" in English. It is written かみ in hiragana. It's pronounced roughly like "kah mee".
This may refer to God, as in the Christian God, or to gods. It is the kami in kamikaze (神風, かみかぜ, divine wind). The Chinese reading is shin, the same shin in Shinto (神道, しんとう). The name of this native religion of Japan literally translates to “the way of the gods”. According to Shinto belief, which is animistic, the kami are spirits residing in all physical things.
When referring to God, the honorific title sama is often appended: kamisama, 神様, かみさま.
