The term samurai (kanji: 侍) means "warrior serving a lord" in English. It is written さむらい in hiragana. It's pronounced roughly like "sah-moo-rye".
Refers generally to any warrior who served under a lord. The original, and now obsolete, pronunciation was saburai, which means “waiting upon” (as in a servant waiting upon a lord). The kanji can be used as the verb haberu, 侍る, which also means “to wait upon [a master or superior]” and is not obsolete.
